Charming florals, animal patterns, a bamboo inspired buckle or a cotton tee adorned
with a single dragonfly - many of our designs draw inspiration from natural surroundings.
We seek to honor these surroundings by accepting our responsibility as environmental
stewards and minimizing our impact on the environment whenever possible.
More Efficient Energy Management
As we update our existing stores and open new ones, we are investing in a centralized energy management system that will help our stores reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This energy management system incorporates a programmable thermostat that is controlled at our headquarters location in Hingham, Mass., and manages lighting and HVAC systems at our stores.
With this centralized energy management system, store lighting and temperature control will adjust according to peak hours, using more energy during busy periods, but reducing our energy usage during non-peak hours. With nearly 600 retail locations, this initiative has the potential to save a substantial amount of energy – and money.
Responsible Paper Sourcing
Millions of our customers order from our catalogs each year and rely on them to stay current with our latest product offerings. Although it is an important business channel, we know that the production of catalogs requires a substantial amount of paper and is one of our largest and most visible environmental impacts.
In 2008, we developed a Paper Procurement Policy to help guide us in our catalog and marketing paper purchasing decisions. Together, the key areas of this policy - responsible forest management, recycled content, efficient use of paper, pollution prevention and vendor commitment to shared issues - help to enforce our commitment to making environmentally responsible purchasing decisions for catalog and marketing paper.
From Waste to Energy
On occasion, we receive defective merchandise from our suppliers where the defects are so severe that the product cannot be donated to charity or it presents a safety hazard. In these cases, this defective merchandise must be destroyed.
Instead of sending this product to landfill, we partner with an energy-from-waste facility that accepts our defective merchandise and processes the scraps into energy that it feeds back to local utilities, helping to provide cleaner energy from alternative sources.
