The objective of the Achor Center, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia, is to improve the living situation of homeless women and their children through a holistic approach to promote self-sufficiency—in short, a real alternative with practical help.

For over 16 years, the Achor Center has addressed the underlying causes of homelessness with a comprehensive strategy of support programs and education to promote economic independence and participation in mainstream society.

The job development program at the Achor Center offers educational opportunities including GED, ESL and medical career training, among others. This program is specifically designed to build effective employment skills.

The Achor Center also provides transitional apartment housing for 70 participants for up to two years. The average stay, however, is about one year. This program facilitates an environment that more closely resembles independent living. Participants are able to develop appropriate parenting and life skills by becoming regularly engaged in constructive activities that promote positive family and community lifestyles.

The Achor Center not only serves women in Achor housing but also those within the community who cannot be accepted due to space limitations. Homeless women with children must be referred by another agency and go through an intake and screening process to assess individual needs.

The J. Jill Compassion Fund grant of $15,000 will be used to fund the Achor Center's adult education program, including GED and job development programs.
