My Sisters' Place, Inc. started its first homeless shelter on Capen Street in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1982. Since then it has grown to three facilities providing numerous programs and services throughout the Greater Hartford area. Although the majority of its residents are from Hartford, they accept referrals from across the country, depending on the situation.
During a typical year, My Sisters' Place will serve over 600 women and children by providing housing, food and other basic needs.
Transitional housing is offered to provide a bridge to permanent housing where families stay in their own apartments for up to two years. While doing so, the women participate in supportive activities, community-based education/job training and life-skills education programs that help them develop skills to prepare them for a competitive job market.
Case management allows the organization to provide each woman with an individual program that helps her to establish economic stability and self-sufficiency.
The J. Jill Compassion Fund grant of $10,000 is being used to continue to fund the transitional living programs and individual case-management services.
