Located in downtown San Francisco, CA, La Casa de las Madres offers emergency residential shelter to battered women and their children. With the help of supportive staff members, the women and children in residence receive around-the-clock care to ensure their health, safety and well-being.

In addition to offering family-based services, vocational and educational referrals, La Casa provides individual and group counseling to empower residents by building on their strengths and supporting and enhancing mother/child relationships. The center also teaches independent living skills and emphasizes family-based intervention to help break the cycle of violence. Residents receive ongoing case-management support as they begin to transition out of the shelter, as well as after they have left the shelter.

La Casa provides all of its services in both English and Spanish on a no-cost basis, and has the capacity to shelter and support 35 women and children per night. Also available at La Casa are two 24-hour crisis phone lines, a drop-in counseling center, the teen intervention program and a community education and outreach program. In addition, advocacy is provided through and on-site at the San Francisco Police Department's Domestic Violence Response Unit, the San Francisco United Family Court, Mary Elizabeth Inn and permanent supportive housing sites across the city.

The J. Jill Compassion Fund grant of $15,000 is being used to continue funding family-based programs and services that support battered women and their children.
