Women’s Center of Wake County was incorporated in 1976 with a mission to empower women to lead self-directed lives, realize economic viability, enjoy satisfying relationships and strengthen their participation in the community.

Over the past thirty years, the Women’s Center has served tens of thousands of women. Last year alone the center served more than 3,000 women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The current programs the center provides include basic needs, supportive services and housing services.

The J. Jill Compassion Fund grant of $10,000 will be used to support the center’s program called Life Enhancement Support Group (LESG). This group provides life skills and employment education primarily for women who are formerly homeless, have very low incomes (less than 40% of area median income) or are experiencing a transition in their lives. Such transitions might be a job loss, divorce, domestic violence or other traumatic life events. The participants are a mix of single women and women with children, most of whom are head of household. The primary goals of LESG are enhancing work skills and increasing personal self-efficacy and self-sufficiency.
