In 1970, community leaders and parents established South Shore Day Care Services (SSDCS) with the goal of providing affordable childcare to working families. The agency is now one of the state’s most respected providers and the only South Shore program that offers childcare services to multiple ages, targeted to low-income parents and at-risk children. Caring each year for more than 700 children, ages two months to fourteen years, South Shore Day Care Services is the area’s largest provider. Two thirds of SSDCS parents have low incomes and would not be able to work without South Shore Day Care Services’ programs.
SSDCS is committed to creating an environment that fosters each child’s development. While parents are at work, talented and committed staff ensure that each child, from the youngest to the oldest, participates in programs designed to meet their individual and special needs. All children attending the programs are both nurtured and challenged.
The J. Jill Compassion Fund grant of $30,000 is being used to support SSDCS’s Project RISE (Reading Is So Exciting). Dedicated to building the early childhood literacy skills of SSDCS preschool children, Project RISE encourages and supports parents to read to their children every day. SSDCS provides the tools and training to help parents enhance their children’s literary skills and strengthen their passion for reading.
